Trek’s Forgotten Format
British & Newspaper Strips (1969–1983)
Most Trek comics guides skip this section entirely, and that’s understandable. The material is obscure, genuinely difficult to find in collected form, and exists in formats that don’t map neatly onto the standard American comics reading experience. It is also genuinely interesting, and for a guide covering Trek’s print history without gaps, ignoring it would be a significant omission.
There are two distinct bodies of work here. The UK weekly strips ran in TV21, Valiant, and associated titles between 1969 and 1973 — 256 individual instalments across 37 complete stories, all TOS-era. The American newspaper strip ran from December 1979 to December 1983, bridging the gap between The Motion Picture and The Search for Spock in daily and Sunday syndicated format. Strip format imposes its own discipline: stories are compressed, panels carry more weight, and the pacing has an urgency that monthly comics rarely match.
Both newspaper strip volumes are out of print but findable through secondary market sellers. The UK weekly strips have no collected edition in any format.
The newspaper strip volumes are the only practical starting point — the IDW hardcovers cover the full run and are far easier to source than original UK publications. If the weekly strip material interests you, Memory Beta maintains the most complete available index.
You’re covering Trek comics history without gaps. The UK weekly format produces noticeably different storytelling rhythms from the American monthly, and almost nobody has written about this material properly — which means anyone who does has the territory largely to themselves.
