Star Trek has been building alien civilisations since 1966, and the best ones are more than forehead prosthetics and a catchphrase. The Klingons went from Cold War proxies to honour-obsessed warriors to something considerably more complicated. The Cardassians showed up and immediately made everyone uncomfortable. This series works through the species that shaped the franchise, asking what each one was really about and whether the ideas behind them still hold up.

Some of these races are mirrors. Others are warnings. Most are both.
